Bumble Inc. names Lidiane Jones as chief executive officer. The move brings a product leader from Slack and Salesforce to the top of one of tech's most closely watched companies, and marks a milestone for Latina representation in the chief executive ranks of American technology.

On January 2, 2024, Bumble Inc. handed its top job to a new leader. Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd moved into the role of Executive Chair, and Lidiane Jones — a product executive who spent the last four and a half years at Slack and Salesforce — became Chief Executive Officer.

The change matters as a structural decision as much as a personnel one. Wolfe Herd built Bumble on a single organizing rule: women message first. That premise, introduced in 2014, separated the company from the dating-app field and eventually expanded into Badoo and into features built around networking and friendship, not just romance. Ten years into that run, the founder chose to step back from daily operations rather than being forced out — a deliberate transfer of authority, with Wolfe Herd remaining involved from the chair.

Jones inherits that mandate from a different training ground. Her background is in product leadership at two of software's most closely watched companies, not dating apps. The bet embedded in her hiring is that the discipline of building tools people use daily at scale translates to building relationships at scale.

She is also Latina, and her appointment lands as one more data point in an industry still short on women of color in chief executive roles at major technology companies. It does not rewrite the numbers by itself. It does confirm that the product track at Slack and Salesforce can lead to the top job at a company the size of Bumble.

In her own words, she describes the assignment in terms of continuity, not disruption. "I am incredibly humbled and honored for the opportunity to lead Bumble Inc.," Jones said. "I look forward to continuing the remarkable work done by Whitney Wolfe Herd and the talented team at Bumble."

What comes next is a matter of execution. Jones has built products at scale before. Whether that skill transfers to running a public-facing consumer company, with its founder still in the room, is the question her tenure will answer starting January 2.
